A Long Way Home

Michael Morpurgo

2006

Long Way Home by Michael Morpurgo tells the story of 12 year old George, an orphan who has been moved through several foster homes and is sent to live with a farming family. Initially planning to run away, he slowly begins to feel accepted and to belong. After a setback sends him back into care, George makes a determined journey to return, realising what home and family truly mean to him.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
