A Great Act of Love

Heather Rose

2025

A Great Act of Love (2025) by Australian writer Heather Rose has 2 characters who are Care Experienced.

The novel follows Caroline Colbert who settles in Van Dieman’s Land in 1839.

Caroline’s father, Jacques-Louis, was born into the French nobility but lost both his parents & his land in the French Revolution. From the age of 10 he lives in kinship care in Edinburgh with a maternal aunt (& his older sister) & sets up as an apothecary in London when he’s adult. He’s transported to Norfolk Island’s penal settlement after killing a woman in London.

The other Care Experienced character is the boy Caroline meets on the ship out to Van Dieman’s Land. Quill is around 10 years of age & has been given to the ship’s captain to pay off the debt. When the ship docks in Van Dieman’s Land, Caroline offers to care for Quill as her ward, ie, not as her servant.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
