15,000 Kids and Counting (2014) is a moving, at times distressing British 3-part documentary about children being adopted from the local authority care system.

We learn that most potential adoptive parents discriminate against children on the basis of their age (children under 7 are preferred) and abilities (children without learning difficulties and disabilities are preferred).

The reason given for adoption being preferred over long term foster care is that children won't then be pestered by social workers checking up on them regularly.

The 3 parts of the documentary are available on You Tube.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
