What are you doing at Christmas?

2024

What you doing at Christmas?' asks Lemn Sissay. When he left Care at 17 he was placed in an unfurnished flat on the edge of a housing estate. That question & the seasonal cheer is a constant reminder of the day #CEP can feel most alone... ‘Christmas day is a reminder of everything that we've never, or rarely had…family - it can be much easier to isolate and wait for it to pass - this has to change. In 2013 I brought a group of volunteers together in Manchester to organize a Christmas dinner for Care Leavers. It was a total success 50 young people had the time of their lives. The next year we started one in Hackney, the following year Leeds, and by last year there were 34 Christmas dinners buzzing in cities and towns across the UK on Christmas Day each one of them is run by passionate volunteers.’

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
