To Haunt & Be Haunted: On the Exhumation of Edgar Allan Poe

Literary Hub

2025

In this LitHub article, Ed Simon explores the topic of Edgar Allan Poe, who was in foster care as a child, being exhumed & reburied after he became famous.

According to Ed Simon, Poe’s initial 1849 funeral wasn’t well attended, & his grave was unmarked.

However, 26 years later Poe was a more popular figure and a more elaborate funeral & reburial was organised.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
