Early in his career, Horowitz published the 1st novel in the Pentagram series, The Devil’s Door-Bell (1983), about a 13-year-old, Martin Hopkins, adjusting to farm life with a foster mother in Yorkshire.

A YA horror story, Martin uncovers a conspiracy that involves his foster mother, witchcraft in the local area, & a strange building.

The Devil’s Door-Bell was followed by The Night of the Scorpion (1984) which has Martin Hopkins travel to Peru with journalist Richard Cole.
