She knocked on the door and the nun said her son was gone' - the story of the forgotten foster children

The Journal

2021

In this 31 January 2021 article from the Irish news outlet, The Journal, Jamie Canavan reports on her findings into “stories of children who were forced into ‘boarding out’” during the early 20th century.

For her PhD, Canavan has explored this early practice of ‘boarding out’, now know as foster care, for the period 1922-1991 in Ireland. As well as archival material, she conducted oral history interviews.

What she found was that even though foster care was preferred to keeping children in workhouses & religious run homes, there were problems, including “maltreatment and neglect” of children.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
