Innocence and 'child rescue' in the colonial imagination

The Philosopher's Zone

2025

In this episode of The Philosopher’s Zone, academic Joanne Faulkner discusses with host David Rutledge the connections between the ‘child rescue’ movement in 19th Britain & the forced removal of Aboriginal Australian children from their families.

Dr Barnado’s practice of abducting children – including ‘street arabs’ – and producing before & after photos is included in the discussion.

Also included is the practice of picturing Aboriginal children as without family, without culture in order to remove those children & train them as workers for white families.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
