George Orwell and me: Richard Blair on life with his extraordinary father

Simon Hattenstone

2025

Richard Blair, adopted son of Eric Blair who is better known as the influential writer George Orwell, has dedicated his retirement years to preserving the memory of his father.

Richard Blair was born in 1944 and only 3 weeks old when he was adopted. Nine months later, his adoptive mother, Eileen Blair, died.

Eric Blair/George Orwell died only 6 years later, but Richard has fond memories of spending time with his father. He says his father was devoted to him, as he is now devoted to keeping alive the memory of his father.

After his father’s death, his aunt Avril, Orwell’s younger sister, became Richard’s legal guardian. He lived on a farm with Avril & her husband Bill.

Trauma warning: This archive contains material relating to care experience including references to abuse, neglect, sexual violence, and institutional harm.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
