Cher: The Memoir, Part One

Cher

2024

American singing star & actor, Cher (b. 1946), was in an orphanage & foster care as a small child.

Cheryl Sarkisian was born in El Centro, California. Her parents divorced when Cher was a baby.

Cher’s mother, Georgia Pelham, who wanted to be a movie star, worked as a waitress, singer and occasionally had minor roles in Hollywood films.

Because Georgia was struggling, she left Cher in an orphanage at one point. The singer has no recollection of the experience. Eventually, Georgia was able to reclaim her daughter.

At another point, Cher was taken into foster care by the state.

"That kind of shit has been happening to women since the beginning of time," writes Cher in the 1st of her 2 part memoir.

Cher left home at age sixteen to move to Los Angeles. Soon after, in 1962, Cher met singer Salvatore “Sonny” Bono. Their biggest hit, “I Got You Babe” was released in 1965 and sold over three million copies.
