Wizard of Oz

1939

In The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, Dorothy Gale is an orphan who lives with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry on a farm in Kansas. Throughout the story, Dorothy takes charge of her circumstances, leading her friends—the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion—on a quest to meet the Wizard and find a way back home. This journey symbolizes her independence and search for security and family, which ultimately reinforces the theme that "there's no place like home". When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route they meet a Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) that needs a brain, a Tin Man (Jack Haley) missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) who wants courage. The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) to earn his help.
