I've been bloody lucky: the story of an orphan named Jimmy Butt

Felicity Dargan

2006

Jimmy relives each colourful episode of his childhood as an orphan growing up in the 1920s and 30s in Australia. He was fostered to 16 different families across Melbourne and country Victoria. Some families treated Jimmy well, others poorly.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group.
