Alex Wheatle

1963-2025

Books and information on author Alex Wheatle, also known as the Brixton Bard. Born in 1963, was in a children's home for most of his childhood. Wheatle's early books reflect on his experience in the children's home, and on making the transition to an independent life. He was awarded a prestigious MBE in 2008 for services to literature, and in 2016 won The Guardian's Children's Fiction prize for his novel Crongton Knights.

Children and young people in social care, and those who have left, are often subject to stigmatisation and discrimination. Being stigmatised and discriminated against can impact negatively on mental health and wellbeing not only during the care experience but often for many years after too. The project aims to contribute towards changing community attitudes towards care experienced people as a group. See glossary HERE
