A. M. Homes

1961-

American writer A. M. Homes (b. 1961) was adopted as a baby and grew up in Chevy Case, Maryland. She was encouraged by her adoptive parents to write and as a child she experimented with poetry and corresponded with public figures.

AM Homes wrote her first novel when she was 19 and still a student at Sarah Lawrence College. Jack was published in 1989 and Homes adapted it as a television film for Showtime TV in 2004.

In 2007, Homes’ published her memoir, The Mistress’s Daughter’, which explored her experience of being adopted, of being “found” by her biological family, and of the histories of both her families.

AM Homes has taught in a number of creative writing programs, including at Columbia, New York University and Princton. She has had articles and essays published in magazines such as The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, and she has written for television.

The Unfolding (2022) is Homes’ first novel in 10 years. A political satire, The Unfolding tells the story of “The Big Guy” who is undone by the election of Barack Obama (b. 1961) as president of the US in 2008.
